One of our main goals in the College is for parents and other family members to appreciate the University of Miami experience on par with their students. Like your student, we want you to feel a sense of belonging to the College. One of the best ways to encourage this sense of community is to keep you informed and to involve you in activities taking place on campus. Throughout the year, you will receive the College of Arts & Sciences Magazine and other news. You can become more informed by reading our news online, attending special events on campus, joining Alumni events in your area, and by serving as a College Ambassador.
Parents of newly admitted students are invited to Future Cane Day, held on campus in February and in April. Family Orientation is an optional, but strongly encouraged, two-day orientation program each August that supports the parents and families of new students. Family Orientation is designed to address important issues and concerns of new undergraduate families and provides important resources, relevant information, and opportunities to connect with administrators, faculty, students, and other families. Family Weekend, a three-day event in October, offers families another opportunity to sample the College’s and the University’s academic and extracurricular offerings.
University of Miami Alumni Events
The University of Miami Alumni Association has chapters in every urban area in the U.S. and in many locations abroad. Most groups welcome UMiami parents' participation in their local activities.
Events on Campus
The University Events Calendar provides information about all events on campus. View upcoming events or subscribe by clicking “Remind Me By Email” to receive news about major lectures and events open to the public. Furthermore, while you are on campus, the College encourages you to visit the Lowe Art Museum, see an on-stage Department of Theatre Arts production at the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre, or attend a lecture presented by our Center for the Humanities.
As you learn more about the College, you will be able to help prospective students and their families learn about the University, too! As a College Ambassodor, you may be invited to join a committee, provide career counseling, suggest campus speakers, or host regional events. Parents can also get involved in expanding our College community and network in two important ways: (1) offer internships with your company/organization; and (2) donate to our internship stipend fund.
Finally, philanthropic support is essential to the continued excellence of the College and the University. Gifts are put to work immediately to sustain the College’s academic excellence and to ensure that all students have access to an outstanding education.
